If we don’t understand history, are we doomed to repeat it? Our 3rd and 4th graders will make sure the Second City doesn’t become the Third City by exploring the Chicago Fire and the human response to disaster. They will learn the habits of historians by studying the context of historical events, examining and evaluating evidence, and interpreting perspectives. These students will explore how life in Chicago was different at the time of the fire and how the city changed as a result of the flames. They will also take a close look at the events leading up to the Chicago fire including who, or what, was to blame for the destruction. Students will apply what they learn about interacting causes for disasters and how people react to them as a lens for understanding contemporary disasters.
